Thrift Store Buys & Other Things.....

Last night ushered in some very strong wind storms. We even had a Thunder Storm. Our weather has been very mild for this time of year & we were about due. As I laid in bed with my Boyz I listened to the rain pound on the metal roof & it seemed at times to be just swirling around & around the house & hitting every corner at once....... The rain eventually pattered & pounded & we all fell asleep!! The weather doesn't usually bother them very much. I like to think because they feel safe in my arms.....

Yesterday I did go to our local Thrift Store. It is called Interfaith & is very much like a Goodwill or Salvation Army. They do a lot of donations & good things for the people in the area who have been challenged by these tough times. They arrange for Thanksgiving Dinner & Christmas gifts for children whose Mom or Dad may be out of work.

Yesterday it was very busy there as it was the beginning of the sign up for their Christmas Gifts. Most of the women who came in were young with toddlers in tow. Oh, I felt so sorry for them. One "girl" had a child & was at least 8 mo. pregnant & she looked like a frightened mouse. A kind lady came up to her & helped guide her way to show her what to do....
"But for the Grace of God go I."

I picked up a silver set of a creamer & sugar & small tray. Actually I got it to paint but when I got it home & cleaned it up it was rather pretty....... I may paint it later but for now it looks so nice with my other silver!
I also bought this Mid-Century Bun Warmer. It is definitely for me to use as such. My Mom had one when I was a child & many times I had wished I had one.

Sometimes vintage things serve great purposes!! These 2 items cost less than $5.00 together. I will probably go back next week with my daughter..... Oh yeah.... I forgot to mention. Our daughter is on vacation next week!!

This is a stamped linen piece I got awhile back on Ebay. It is a Vintage Mixer Cover. I have already started the embroidery on it. The colors I chose are very primary as these are the colors that were popular them. The binding on it is a minty green!! Yep.... I plan on using it!!
By-the-way...... The Pillowcases are finished. Watch my blog for the beginning of the GiveAway the day after Thanksgiving. I will also have a new Blog background of the Christmas sort!!
Take Care & Have a Wonderful Day!!

Betcha' Didn't Know.......

Today is the week before Thanksgiving & with most everything done except for the cooking of the dinner & the last minute dusting I thought I would post something more mundane.......
Ten really uninteresting things, that quite frankly, probably drive my Hubby nuts about me!
*************
1. I am severely Lactose Intolerant. I can get "the trots" just by passing the dairy case in a grocery store....just kidding of course!! I cook with lactose free milk & use soy cheese..... do not eat ice cream!! bummer.....
2. I do not have the capability to burp. No kidding, neither did my Dad. This is the reason why I don't drink soda or anything bubbly!! Think about it!!
3. I am more like my Dad than my Mother. In some cases that is good but in others.... not so much!!
4. I am terrified of the dark. I don't subscribe to the old adage of "if it wasn't there in the daylight it won't be there in the dark"!!
5. I love Hoagies/Subs or whatever they are called in your region. I also adore sandwiches!! Seafood is my total weakness. If it swims I will eat it... exceptions of Calamari... yuck.......
6. I am a pickle snob. I will only eat Valasic brand & I can't stand a soggy pickle!! I have been known to throw out a whole jar if I found 1 soggy pickle. Gross......
7. As most of you know, I love to read a good novel. Did you know that one of my guilty pleasures is reading The New York Times on a Sunday?? It can take me 3 days to read it all & attempt the crossword puzzle!! I said attempt....... tee hee............
8. My obsessive "must haves" are.... My home library stocked with my new & timeless novels. My pantry stocked & arranged. My Grandmother used to say "Food in the pantry is like money in the bank"!! Hey, we could probably survive being "snowed in" for a month!! LOL!!
9. Collections??? I collect vintage & new crochet, knit, embroidery & cross stitch patterns. Resin Snowmen, vintage & newer baby dolls, vintage linens, chenille & barkcloth!!
10. What I want to accomplish in the next year??? Take time to read more. I always bring more books home from everywhere!! I just can't help myself.... Learn to knit socks like so many of my blogger friends have done!!
Well, now there are some rather quirky things ............
*****************
Today is still rather warm for here. It will be in the 50's & that is nice for this time of year. My Hubby was out last night & may not be in today..... I think I will go to Interfaith today. That is equivalent to Goodwill & see what goodies I can find. I haven't been there for quite awhile.....
Have a Lovely Day!!
p.s. My new hot water heater is all hooked up & works splendidly!! Ahhhhh.... I Love the Creature Comforts ! ! <:-)

What are They Thinking?!?!?!???

Yesterday I received a request from my doctor that I need to go to The Breast Care Center after all to confer with the specialist & probably have a breast biopsy. I already had the appointment for Dec. 1st so I will just go then & I will take whatever advise he gives me & have it done. I had this done several years ago so this time I know what to expect. Bummer.....

Yesterday the news of the new standards for Breast Cancer Screening that were released were disturbing, very disturbing. They want women over 50 to only have a mammogram every 2 years?!?!?!?? Excuse me...... They don't want young women to have baseline mammograms??? How will the radiologists ever compare bad from good tissue??? Is this because of the insurance companies?????
No one will say why this has been done but I quite frankly smell something bad.... I think it is the powerful insurance companies........ Shame on them!!!!
The one comfort I & my daughter have is that this does not pertain to someone with a family history of Breast Cancer as we do. What about all the women who don't know their history or could be the first to have it????
What is wrong with our society that a persons life is just looked upon as a statistic or an average & not someone who should be protected......
I hope somewhere, somehow, there is a karmic justice for these "think-tanks" that determine the quality of our lives......
Sorry about my rant... I am just so, well you know........
Until Later....
**post script commentary about the Insurance Companies..... "Figures lie & liars figure!!"

Christmas Collectible & My Snoozy Bears er' Cats!!

Morning Everyone.... Hope everyone is having a good day.......
The little setting below is on my TV for the Holidays. It is a Lemax .....Christmas Tree Sales of the Mid-Century. I just love it as it reminds me of my childhood!! I just love the little silver trailer they are selling the trees out of........

The morning has all but escaped me today. I had to run some errands which consisted of going to the Vets (Our Boyz Dr. Joe) & get some of their prescription Feline CD.
Hubs had a damaged load of Dog Food yesterday & being how neither the receiver nor the shipper wants it back & all they would do is throw it away we take it to donate to our local shelter. It is Purina's Beneful... This time we only had 1 case. Sometimes we have a couple of cases & they are so grateful to get it. We also get cat food occasionally to donate!!
So today there will be some full bellies at the shelter!! <:-)
Here are some cute pics of what we call our "Snoozy Bears".......
Max is all snuggy under a small afghan. Does a cat know how to sleep or what????

My Sweet Bailey commandeered the sofa & managed to wiggle into all the pillows. He is the consummate cuddler......

This is our "Big Guy".... Mr. Binks.... He loves to sprawl. Even when it is winter & the floors can be chilly he has a very thick coat & he will still sprawl.....
The embroidery & crochet of the Pillowcases for my upcoming GiveAway are finished. Now all I have to do is put them together. I will start the GiveAway after Thanksgiving. Wait till you see them..... They are so pretty!!
Hope you all have a Wonderfully Productive Day!!

Monday Brain Noodlin'.......

Good Early Morning!!

I was up this morning at about 3 a.m. ....Why??? You ask??...... Well, that was about the time when my Big Ole' Maine Coon Cat, Mr. Binks, who was sleeping on the foot of my bed, decided to jettison a nasty hairball. Good thing he gave me notice so I at least got him off the bed.

Any Who..... That being said..... After the drama I could not get back to sleep. I thought it was a good time to get another post done before much of anyone else is awake.

I love the quietness of our town at this time of the morning. Not many are up yet & this morning about all you can hear is the wind rustling of the dried out leaves of the vine that still clings to the edge of our sun room.

Yesterday was a busy day for us. I went grocery shopping in the morning. The grocery store finally had their Lactose Free Egg Nog. I adore egg nog but I am extremely allergic to dairy so anything remotely milk is out for me. I got a quart "just for me"!!

When I got back Hubs was getting the lights & decorations out of the garage to put them up as it was already in the 60's & it was better than doing it in sub-zero temps & snow. (We have done that before & it wasn't fun!!)

I was in the process of helping him & we walked into the cellar & I heard him say "Oh no!!" I turned to see what was wrong & there was our hot water heater leaking water all over the place.

Oh! You've got to be kidding.........

Off we went, in our new SUV, to Home Depot. About 2 hr. later we were unloading a new hot water heater into the cellar. Our plumber lives quite literally next door & he came over to have a look. They will hook it all up this week!! We knew we were on borrowed time with the other one as it was installed in the 80's.

After all was settled & we got something to eat we went back to putting up the Christmas lights. Hubs had to leave Sunday evening for an early delivery this a.m.

So-o-o-o-o-o..... after all the "dust was settled" we had, overall, a VERY busy weekend. And VERY expensive one too!! I think this year Santa already visited us.... We got a new SUV & a new Hot Water Heater!! Ho...Ho....Ho.....

Hope you all had a great, but quiet, weekend!!!

Until Later.......

Excitement Today....... Big Purchase for Us ! !

Well, today got quite interesting for us....... No ...No one got chased by a psychotic turkey...I just thought this Norman Rockwell print was so cute...... What did we do...... Well, we had a 2001 Ford Taurus that has been paid in full for a long time. It had just gotten to the point where it was nickle & dimeing us to death so-o-o-o-o-o......

We traded in the Taurus & are the proud new owners of a really cool SUV!! No not that .... although you can bet I could have bought several SUV's for what this Vintage beauty is worth!!

We bought a 2007 Ford Explorer!! It is just like this one & even the same color. Now we rarely buy automobiles as we keep them for years. This SUV is not new but it is VERY low mileage & wow does it have great hauling capacity!! Just think all the damage my daughter & I can do on our next foray to the mall!!
Yeah, yeah, I know, there is the gas guzzling factor..... I have one thing to say about that....
I really don't care. If CEO's can fly their private jets & ride in their Limo's then I can have a nice SUV!! I love it & it drives & rides like a d-r-e-a-m!!
Until Later......

Finally it is Friday......

Good Morning.......
I thought that today I would feature a Norman Rockwell print...... I believe it is of a Soldier from WW2 home on leave for Thanksgiving. Looking at this painting I find it very thought provoking. I picture his Mother sitting there looking at him & somewhere in her memory she sees her little boy, not this man who she prays to keep safe every night. I imagine the Soldier wishing he were that little boy.....
Norman Rockwell had a rare talent for capturing the facial features & body language of everyday people & it is as if you know just what they are thinking & feeling.

I just finished reading a new book by Garrison Keillor called "A Christmas Blizzard". If you are not familiar with his work give it a try. His books are comfortable & entertaining & written about everyday people. He has written the Lake Wobegon novels & is the creator of A Prairie Home Companion series that I listen to on NPR!!
**************
Update on Mammogram.... There was an apparent cancellation so I had the 2nd mammogram on Wednesday aft. Am waiting for the results.... I really don't expect any problems as I saw the xray & the only reason they recalled is because of a precaution caused by family history of breast cancer. Hopeful this is "it" until next year!! Thanks so much for your prayers & support. Because of what my Mother went through my life goes into a tailspin whenever I get a questionable mammogram.
**************
Our weather has become quite unseasonably warm. While today will be rainy & windy with remnants of Hurricane Ida, this weekend is to be in the 60's. That is so warm for this time of year.
We bought & moved into this house on November 12, 1995. The first morning we woke up to a snow storm. It snowed almost non-stop that winter with snow totals nearly 200 inches for the season. What a year.... The following year we had so much snow that it was collapsing structures. So-o-o-o I am so happy to have this unusually warm weather!!
Gonna' close here..... Hope you all have a Wonderful Day ! !
Until Later.......
