WHY WASHING YOUR FACE IS SO IMPORTANT

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

We all know that a skin care regimen starts with a good cleanser, but, have you ever wondered why it’s so important?  Let’s explore the reasons behind why we need to make sure our skin is
cleaned properly, no matter what skin type.

Why Is It Important To Use A Cleanser?

Even if you don’t wear makeup, it’s very important to wash your face with a cleanser.  “It’s not just makeup you want to wash off”, says Dr. Charles Zugerman, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Northwestern University.  Facial cleansers remove makeup, pollutants, bacteria and unwanted debris off of our face.

In addition, it’s important to recognize that properly cleansing the skin prepares your skin to absorb products you may put on after, like a serum or moisturizer.  Clearing out your pores allows the moisturizer to penetrate into your skin for maximum effectiveness.  What’s the point of applying moisturizers and treatments if your skin isn’t able to absorb them fully?

How To Choose A Cleanser That’s Right For Your Skin Type

When choosing a cleanser, April W. Armstrong, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of California Davis recommends on WebMD to “Always use a gentle cleanser, since harsh soaps can trigger the skin to increase oil production.”  I completely agree, and even though it may be tempting to get that squeaky clean feel, it may strip your skin of the good oils — making your skin react by producing even more oil!

Additional Tips:

- A regular facial cleanser can’t properly break down and remove waterproof makeup, so be sure to use a separate makeup remover if you use waterproof makeup

- Want to add an additional ‘rinse’ cycle?  Use a toner to remove any debris or makeup that a cleanser may have left behind!  You’ll be surprised to see what a little toner and a cotton pad will remove even AFTER you’ve cleansed your face, especially if you wear makeup

- After a thorough cleansing, be sure to follow up with a moisturizer that best fits your skin type and concerns.  Even if you have oily skin, don’t skip this step!  Oily does not mean your skin is moisturized or hydrated. According to Rebecca Kazin, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute and Director of Johns Hopkins Cosmetic Center (WebMD), “Even oily skin needs to be moisturized to look its best.”
I often get asked what kind of skin care line I use and I am sure that you won't be surprise when I tell you that Shaklee has a line for that and I and LOVE it!  Yup, it's called Enfuselle (like to infuse the cell)!  I have been exclusively using it for 9 years.  I got my hubby started several years ago too and he is hooked too, lol!  I go back and forth between and dry and oily kits because I love them both and my skin likes to change with my pregnancies.  My favorite product is the night cream because it makes my face feel like silk and I also really like the morning cream because my make-up blends nicely with it and it has spf 15 in it.

NATURAL BODY DETOXIFICATION TIPS

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Every day your body disposes of toxins from the metabolism of food, fluids, medications, and even the air you breathe.  Your liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and digestive system all play important roles to filter, inactivate, and remove toxic by-products and waste materials out of the body.

What can you do to enhance your body’s natural processes?  Well, the good news is that it’s really not that hard to improve your body’s detox systems—and the result is that you will most likely have more energy, fewer skin issues, and fewer minor digestive complaints.  The starting point is a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  I strongly urge folks to stay away from fast foods, as eating chemical-laden, often fried foods adds a HUGE burden of toxins for your body to process!  Vegetables and whole grains are rich in fiber and help bind toxins and harmful metabolites so they can be excreted.

Here are five tips to support your body’s detoxification systems:

Eat more whole grains.  When choosing breads and cereals, look for phrases such as “100% whole wheat/whole grain,” and choose breads that provide at least 3 grams of fiber per serving, as well as cereals that provide at least 5 grams fiber per serving.
•Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit—not sodas.  Fresh fruit is generally low in calories but high in fiber.  One cup of fresh blackberries or raspberries has about 8 grams of fiber.  One medium-sized pear or apple has 4 grams.
Eat your veggies.  Vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber.  One artichoke has 5 grams of fiber, and a potato (eaten with the skin) provides 5 grams.
•Ladle up some legumes.  Beans and legumes are low in fat and versatile (great in soup, on salads, or as a vegetarian entree).  A serving of beans provides about 6 to 8 grams of fiber.
Drink more water.  We recommend at least six glasses of plain water per day.  Carry a water bottle with you (make sure it’s BPA free) and commit to refilling it at least three times per day!  Your
digestive system and your skin will thank you.

What do you do for your skin?

Have a great day!

Tips for a Safe and Happy Summer

2010 05 23_3825

Summer's back—and so is fun in the sun! But before you hit the beach or stage a friendly water gun fight in your backyard, keep in mind that ultraviolet rays from the sun can do a number on your skin; in fact, they are the most common cause of premature aging. Here are some simple ways you can protect yourself—and your loved ones—and still have fun in the sun.

Reduce Sun Eposure During Peak Hours
2010 05 23_3813 UV rays are strongest and most dangerous between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so the less time you spend outdoors during these hours, the better. That doesn't mean you have to ditch out on all the fun. For instance, instead of heading out to the pool at 2 p.m., wait a few hours and go at 5 p.m. The sun will still be up and there'll be plenty of light out.  And don't be fooled on an overcast day—you can still get burned because up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate through the clouds. If you can, stay in the shade.

Cover Up 2010 05 22_3928
Be fashionably smart. Wear protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. Remember to cover your  hair and head with a wide-brimmed hat. You might even consider carrying an umbrella for shade.  The more protection you have the better off your skin will be.

2010 05 19_3971Protect Your Eyes Always wear sunglasses. Not only are they great for complementing your wardrobe, they also deflect harmful UV rays that reflect off of water, sand, and other surfaces. This helps reduce the risk of cataracts and other eye conditions. And, you won't have to squint!

Apply Sunscreen Generously 2010 05 23_3878
Don't be shy. Apply a liberal amount of sunscreen evenly on all areas of the skin—and don't forget your lips, nose, ears, neck, hands, feet, and head (if necessary). Do so at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure and remember to re-apply every two hours, especially after swimming.

And Arm Yourself with Antioxidants!
What's the big deal? Environmental assaults such as sunlight, pollution, stress, and even normal 2010 05 19_3973metabolism produce free radicals in our bodies, that can damage cells, alter DNA, and cause skin to age prematurely. Phytonutrients such as carotenoids and flavonoids—antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, and plants—combat these free radicals and protect your body against cellular damage. So be sure to include lots of antioxidants in your diet. Your skin—and your overall health—will thank you.
